Default Wheel vibration...tire moving on rim!!!

Hello All... I took my 2005.5 S4 back to the dealer for a wheel vibration. I have the "upgraded" optional rims, and per the dealer (verified by marking the outside rim and tire), it looks like the tires are moving on the rim counterclockwise. The dealer has sealed all of them with some "gunk" but, as of today, one still seems to keep moving, throwing the tire/rim out of balance. It was driven about 30 miles since the sealing and it has moved about two inches. Has anyone heard of, or experienced this...Is this dangerous...any blow-out potential? Any suggestions/thoughts would be appreciated? Thanks!

tell me about it...the dealer said the inside of the rim is smooth like "glass". Is it that the rims need a fatter tire? I thought these were originally on the RS6, but I am not certain...

Default wow...that's weird.

just stay on top of it. IIRC, if you take a new car in for the same problem 3 times within a year of the date of purchase and they still can't fix it, you may be able to 'lemon law' the car and get the entire vehicle replaced. Worth looking into.

Default A bit overkill for a wheel problem...

... plus this law very much varies by state. I lemoned one car and regretted it.

Default yes, going through with it would be overkill in this case.

But he could use the law as leverage to get a different set of wheels, possibly. It's just a wheel problem, but I'm sure very annoying nonetheless...especially on a brand new car.

Default I took mine in for wheel vibration about 2 months ago....

Dealer said one of my wheels was slightly out of round from a pothole or something (I've put every mile on this car, and haven't hit any potholes). They rebalanced it, and it was slightly better, but I can still feel a very slight vibration.
Thanks for this post, I'll put a small piece of tape on the wheels and tires for a marker, and see if I have a similar issue.
Never heard of anything like this before.

Default Long story

<center><img src="http://stan.jirman.com/car/quickpot.jpg"></center><p>
One day, the engine in my B5 S4 exploded. 4000rpm in 3rd gear under very moderate gas. Two valves went thru the piston. At that time, the car was 6 months / 15k miles old (yes it was a busy year). Same defect was on a brand new S4 that came on the same transport as my car - that car died with 15 miles on the clock, same day I was picking up mine. So I was not alone - bad batch of engines, it looked like.

They pulled the engine and put a new one in. Wouldn't run. Some head scratching, 2nd new engine. It wouldn't run. 30 calendar days passed (this was over Xmas, and in the meantime I was driving the dealer's A6 2.7T - the dealer was really great about all this), dudes from AoA in Michigan came and saw no reason why the car wouldn't run, but could not fix it. They bought it back without much of a hassle, actually. At that time, the S4 was no longer manufactured, and I had a choice between 5 silver/black S4s in the west region, so I picked the local one. Our relationship started with a dead battery the day of delivery.

This way I traded my perfect, rattle free, issue free (blown engine aside), built-to-order, beautiful car for a car that I didn't really care that much for (not a fan of silver nor black seats). Eventually, the 3rd new engine worked, and after a $65k repair tab, the car went to auction. Who knows where he is now...

My silver car turned out to be a minor disaster. Nothing major - just one set of new turbos at 7000 miles, ha ha (never chipped) - but a thousand little things here and there. There was a small electric fire under my seat, there were the two A/C control units, the three batteries, and so on. And rattles as if it was a Peugeot. I just learned to live with a rattling car and counted the days until my B7 arrived - which rattles just as much, just different. I am learning patience and poise - not something I am normally known for. I hear it's helpful with kids, I'll need that.

Moral of the story: if you have a car that you otherwise like, but that has an isolated problem - have them fix it. Threaten all you want, but don't give up too easily or make them give you a new car just because you can. The devil you know may well be better than the devil you don't. I hear people lemoning cars left and right, sometimes for reasons that are plain absurd. If my A/C stank like a dead skunk, despite repeated cleaning, yes, I'd want to get out of that. But an engine is an isolated unit, even if a big one, and doesn't affect the rest of the car. The rest of the car was perfect, and I wish I never had asked for the buy back. I'd probably still have it.
