Default Where is the mileage stored? Instrument cluster?

My instrument cluster is lose and has dirt inside of it. I'm taking this as sign that is has been opened. I just got the car last week. I'd like to get it replaced. Does anyone know how much they are?

Thanks

Default expensive to do. Mine has dust/dirt specks in it also.

It's not too difficult to remove it and just use some compressed air to blow out the dust/dirt.

Is there a some where I can find a "how to" on removal?

How much is expensive? $1000?

Default check in the "tech section". The cluster would cost around ~$800 then you'll

have to pay the dealer labor to code it to your car. They are probably the only ones that can do that.

I'm a newbie here. I see many different forums but no "tech section"?

Where would I find that? Thanks!

Look at the top section header under resources, tech.

Default mileage is stored in the cluster, but you should be able to take the face of the cluster off fairly

easily. Once the face is off, you can just blow all the dust out and clean it with some glass cleaner or something.

This is what a B5 RS4 cluster looks like with the front taken off:

Default Its probably best to take it to a dealer

An audi tech recently told me that certain models (the newest ones, with the 7 digit SKC, I believe) require a new ECU, Keys and Cluster any time any one of those 3 need to be replaced because of the way the current generation of immobilizers worked.

However, I believe that with the B6's, you can simply have audi connect their vag tool to the car, and the tool can get your VIN and lookup the Secret Key Code (SKC) stored on Audi's server in Germany, set the SKC on the cluster. It sounds like something from a movie, really.
According to RossTech, certain cars got a little tag with a scratch off panel that had the SKC under it. If that is the case, someone with just a VAGCOM could install a new cluster themselves.
Also, you will need to set your mileage, which is quite easy, but it must be done in the first 62 miles.
