Why get an S4 instead of a 335?

I don't like turbos with automatics. While the 335 has minimal lag, it still suffers from a little hesitation when you go to the throttle for a big dose of acceleration: the boost comes up, the car downshifts, and your neck snaps as the torque hits. It is way worse on cars with more lag (like a Cayenne Turbo), but even the 335 has this (very) frustrating trait.
V8s power delivery is better suited to automatics that turbo powerplants.
Note that I am a hard-core manual transmission guy, so I am overly sensitive to this...

Having to click on each post is cumbersome. My estimate is that this board has about a tenth of the activity of BF, probably because of the board layout. It's good enough to make me want want to buy another BMW.....well...almost.

1. Is all weather capability impotant to you? Sure the 335 comes in the xi version, but quattro is far superior and the xi BMW doesn't come with a sport tuned suspension. You can't even order this as an option.
2. How important is rarity and exclusivity? S4's are rare. 3-series bimmers are EVERYWHERE.
3. How much are you going to modify your car? A chip upgrade in the 335 will make it blistering fast, but you are definitely pushing the reliability of the engine. Breathing mods on the S4 aren't cheap but do produce a reasonable bump in powerwith complete safety.
4. How important is a top-notch interior? BMW isn't bad, but Audi is better. There is no finer interior in the auto industry, and my feeling is that you spend all your time in the car looking at the interior.
In the end, you won't go wrong with either car. For pure speed and handling, the rear wheel drive 335 is the way to go, but if all-weather capability is at all a factor for you, it will be a different story. The BMW xi is much heavier, slower, less sport oriented than its 2-wheel drive counterpart. The S4 on the other hand is a step above the A4 in every way.
And remember......all the advice, reviews, etc, are no substitute for a test drive.
