Default I get the best of both worlds, I get o drive my S4 to the dealer every week to get fixed and they

give me a loaner that get great gas milage, so I get the thrills of the S4 (not as often as I would like) and thrills of great gas milage. Only problem here is that I had to pay 50K.

Default Ah, but "why" were there shortages...

The reasons were complex, but it wasn't just due to cuts by OPEC.

The panic buying behavior I mentioned was one reason, but price controls were another...

Default Your resale concerns are valid for the fuel consumption issue and a few others. The question (more)

is how much of a concern will it be. If the S4 continues to be a enthusiast type manchine, fuel costs & reliability issues are irrelevant. That kind of demand is quite inelastic and a few bucks for gas or repairs be damned. As to whether it's coveted by the "go fast" set, a lot will depend on the competion's offering in the class of vehicle, new and used.

Default I sold my ALMS tt that had been chipped etc. to get my B6 S4...

the S4 simply out drives the TT. I loved my TT, but even in the handling department the S4 will eat the TT up. The TT(Golf) chassis was not a goid choice of platforms for a "sports Car." The S4 is definatley bigger and heavier, but is so much easier to drive fast out old twisty country roads. It has less understeer than the TT and is easier to get power on oversteer. Braking in the cars is also quite different. I had my stock TT brakes fading on runs to the mall, I haven't experienced that yet with the S4.

Default Re: There weren't really gas shortages in the 70s, either...

People went a little nuts and started topping off thier tanks every other day. It was a media hysteria combined with good ol' American craziness.

Default Uh... 23mpg vs. whatever the S4 is doesn't exactly sound like a big difference..

Maybe you should find a 1.8TDI somewhere.

(oh yeah, and it's hard not to make a random TT comment, as I come from the B5S4 forum...)
