Default Why Tip over 6speed ???

I've noticed alot of folks here are S4-Tip drivers.
Just curious as to why ?
Buying a car like this, you want Performance.
Performance usually comes out with a Manual tranny over an Auto/Tip.

Just curious as to why you would chose the tranny you did.

No GG tax is a good first reason.

Drive a tip in "S" mode and give me your thoughts. It is pretty intuitive, holds shift until >3K rpm's, downshifts if revs are too low, and easy to drive in freeway traffic.

paddle shifters are fun too if you want total control of your shift points(up to redline minus
500 rpms)

Here are my two reasons:
1) fuel economy
2) wife required a tip in case she ever drove it

I've driven both the tip and the stick S4. I honestly thought the manual cars were slightly dangerous with the quite obvious DBW bugs. The manual S4 cars are the hardest cars to drive smooth of any manual cars I have ever driven. The only way I would even consider driving another Audi with a manual would be if Audi comes out with an update to address the DBW bugs.

The only major complaint I have about the tip cars is that Audi came out with a software update that lowers the shift point to 6300 RPM for the 1-2 shift and 6800 RPM for the 2-3-4-5-6 shifts. Mine had a 7000 RPM shift point in each gear before the "upgrade", and the performance was a lot better back then. The manual S4 cars can shift as high as 7200 RPM in stock form and 7400 RPM with a chip. To say the least, this makes the manual cars a lot quicker, especially once you start adding any mods. The V8 in the S4 needs a lot of RPM to run hard. Short shifting it like the tip cars now do really kills performance. AoA told me to **** up a rope on this issue, so my 2004 S4 with tip is the last new Audi I will ever buy.

Default quick question

At wide open throttle in tip mode, how high are you able to rev your S4 tip car before it automatically shifts from 1st to 2nd? For the first 5k, mine shifted at 7k. After the 5k maintainance, mine shifts at 6300. AoA calls this normal.

Default I'll let you know .........

I always shifted out myself, and never let
the "safety" kick in.

Just had my 5K service last month.
I'll stand on it tomorrow and let you know
where it shifts..

Default I chose tip over 6speed for several reasons

I was 95% going to get a 6-speed manual until I test drove it.
I was heavily satified with my daily comfort driving in D mode.
I was heavily satisfied with my fun driving in
S mode.
I don't go to tracks or track my times, so I don't need the most optimal choice, manual or not, this car is fast!

Default 6 speed and DBW dangers...

What do you mean by the manual is dangerous because of the DBW problems ?
Can you clarify?

Do most feel the Tip is just as sporty?
Meaning having just as sporty a feel as the manual?

I know the Tip in my 1.8T is a DOG.
I can't beleive I actually took this thing off the lot.

I should have stuck to my guns and spent the $$$$ in the first place for the S4. Now I'm going to pay the price to get out of this car. Live and learn I guess.

I just want to see if the Tip in the S4 will feel more sporty for my 'spirited' driving style and also for those occasional trips to the track for a driving day or school....

Thanks to all for your insight. It is appreciated.

Default Re: 6 speed and DBW dangers...

I have a 6 speed, it is very easy to drive this car. There are no dbw dangers, it sounds like sour grapes to me. go for the 6 speed, have no fear.
