Windshield crack - any experience?

I got a crack in my windshield while on a trip last week. I wasn't aware of anything hitting the windshield - came out of a restaurant after a pit stop and noticed it. Called the service adviser at my dealer and he said they don't cover windshields - it's always a stone or something. He said they'd look at it when I take it for 5K tomorrow, but don't count on coverage. Also, they don't replace it - I have to find a local glass place.
Does this square with the experience of others? Any advice?
BTW, the car was great on the trip. 2000 miles, about 23.5 MPG with 93 octane. Average speed over 60. Lost a little oil (1/8 in. on the dipstick) and a little pressure in the rear tires (stock), but other than that and the windshield crack, the car's a dream under all conditions.

as soon as I put her in gear I can hear a cracking noise come from the windshield as it releases pressure that was built while sitting still.
That windshield has some crazy stress put on it. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a stress crack. Look for damage.

IF it is a stress crack they will cover it for you but be very persistant. If you sont see any visible impact marks on the window dotn let them get the better of you. I acted like a d*ck untill they just covered it to shut me up

call your insurance company, they many times will have a glass person come to you, set you up somewhere, or let you do it at a place of your choosing.

Personally my car got this weird inverted L shaped crack that was 6"x3" on the drivers side (starting from the bottom near the wiper pivot). 2 weeks later, an identical one showed up on the passenger side. I brought it to the dealer and showed the 2 cracks. At first they claimed stone chip, but eventually figured that the odds of 2 cracks was a bit weird. They replaced it as part of warranty, and 2 years since the car hasn't had a problem with the windshield. I'm not too keen on the original glass that Audi put in.

the service adviser did find a little mark below the wiper that looked to me like a possible stone impact, so I couldn't argue. My comprehensive insurance will cover a windshield replacement. But if it happens again I'll be suspicious.
Is an L-shaped crack unusual, or do they often appear like that?
