The better tires I ever had are the Nokian Hakkapelitta R. I got a set last year for my wife's Volvo XC70 (also a heavy AWD car) and love them. Excellent traction on snow and ice, very quiet and confortable winter tire. This is what I just ordered for my new (new to me) S4 Cabriolet together with a set of B5 S4 rims. Size will be 225/45R17
My brother also has a set of Hakkapelitta RSi on his B5 A4, 3 seasons (30,000 miles) and still going strong.
I have a set of Toyo Garrit on my C240 and am very satisfied with them and did not like the Pirelli Carving on my previous AWD Volvo. My father has a set of Michelin Pilot Alpin on his B6 A4 Avant: good performance tire on wet conditions but not excellent on snow and ice, plus they wear faster as they are high performance winter tires.
I hope this can help. Again, this is based on personnal experience on similar vehicles.
