Default Grab a flashlight and look at the pads. You should be able to see how much pad is actually left.

Anywhere between 3/32" and 1/4" should be fine for your trip. Below that might be grounds for taking it pretty easy on the brakes. Below 1/8" is too low for your excursion.

Default 500 miles is only 3.57% of 14000, I bet the sensor is set to go off at 10% or so.

Which would give you closer to 1400 miles. Of course, I'm only guessing.

Default yep my 85 Audi 5000 had them!

which reminds me JD, when i was @ drexel in engineering I screwed up some freshman design teams project up, they were doing brake pad wear sensors, (they thought it was a new and original idea--they were thinking patent this patent that etc etc) till i pointed it out to them my crappy 85 5000 had them....man did i sink their ship!

They were so bold they didnt believe, me till i showed em the bently. They still didnt believe, I pulled a wheel off. man that felt good to deflate their egos.....

glad i left engineering.

Default That is a good question for the techs at your dealer. Do bear in mind you are only looking at the

outside pad, so you could also discover that the inside pad on the left side is 1/8" and the inside on the right side might be 1/4".

In either case, the 1/8" on the right side is probably why the sensor went off. If you were gentle on your brakes 500 miles should be doable, but if you intend to romp on it or do heavy Mtn grades it may be a little marginal.

Default The head instructor for ACNA preaches that brakes should only be used for balancing a car anyway :)

Nice to hear things worked out. Doing mostly freeway driving does make something like your excursion a little easier. 475 miles of twisty mountain roads might have been another story entirely.....

Default They replace the rotors anyway so enjoy and don't worry about it.

I had one set of brakes last 2800 miles on my last S4. How you might ask did I do that. After 120 miles of illegal road racing with friends and 3 days at the track my pads were smelly and my rotors were warped. The service manager thought it was da funny. He actually giggled. AOA $1200...me zero...zilch..nadda. I love the word free and I love my S4.
