This has me really pissed off - looking at the new Oil standard TSB, Audi claims it's for 2005 models and up. Then goes on to say that the only approved oils are synthetics, and that they won't honor the warranty if any oils other than those on the list are used.
We all know that the 2005 S4 and the 2004 S4 have the same engine, but they refuse to pay for the synthetic oil changes in 2004 models. Has anyone attempted to take this up with Audi? Seems like they're trying to save a few pennies... but burn us older owners in the process by either using oil that they've deemed isn't appropriate for our engines, or charging us for synthetic oil changes.

It doesn't make any sense what Audi is doing, and I don't think they are going to change their tune anytime quickly. The funniest part is that when I asked one of their rep's what came in my 2004 S4, he told me that it cames with Synthetic from the factory and that's what should stay in it at all times. It's really not the dealers fault, as they are just doing what AOA is telling them to do.
As for me, I don't really care that much, because I have been running Mobil 1 0w-40 since 1,000 miles. What will be interesting will be the 2004 S4's using fossil oil that start having the same problems with oil sludge at around 50,000 miles that the 1.8T's had before they all went to synthetic. It's just so sad that Audi can't get it together enough to just do the right thing and really be a leader in the automotive industry.

it'll be a waste of a stamp. Done that. I'm running M1 0w-40 year round. It's approved for 04's. Guess we have to suck up the charge to bring it to the dealer if, like mine, they don't stock it. I've stopped beating my head against the wall on this one. I've got better things to do, they will not bring a coherent policy to their dealers so sweet talk yours and go from there.

i can't afford to have AoA stick me with an engine problem later in life.
Figure Mobile 1 0W-40 is the best bet considering potential $25,000 engine rebiuld

The 1.8 engine has a turbo, which is much harder on the oil than a NA engine. Furthermore, with a 3.7 qt sump, the oil deteriorates quickly as well.
I'm not recommending running dino, I just don't think you'll have sludge issues if you do. Look at the 2.8L engines as an example.

lease your car. You then could have Audi change you oil for free every 10 K miles with dino oil. Damn the wear and durability issues and give he car back between 30K & 45K and let the next owner and Audi worry about it. But I hope that come back to haunt Audi like it did with Mercedes. They had the same oil change policy and ended up with a class action suit and had to give extended waranties due to engine wear as a result of their 10K dino oil change policy. Since 05 MUST have synthetic. It would be prudent to advise future 04 S4 buyers to be carefull buying an 04 that had been leased unless the oil change interbval and type of oil used can be verified.
