Default Xenon+ Redux

Time to flog the ole horse again...

At one point I asked about Xenon+ and the 2005's. The reason for asking was the price sheets for the A4's had Xenon+ as a "lighting option". Well, Phil G posted a pic of his '05 S4 (<a href="https://forums.audiworld.com/s4b6/msgs/117357.phtml">ref link</a>) asking if he had Xenon+; Wes answered in with a "Yes", basing his assessment on the shape of the lens.

Well, since my headlamps look identical to Phil's, I assume mine are Xenon+ as well (see below and please chime in). Trouble is that nowhere on my sticker does it mention Xenon+ (Build 7/04). From what I understand, the Xenon+ allows some of the Xenon bulb's light to bleed over into the high beam reflector (again please chime in) to supplement the halogen high beam lamp. Now, as I contemplate diving into some e-code Xenon+ housings, I ask myself if it's worth it or do I attempt the clear corner mod. Please share your opinions.

Another question, since I haven't delved into this yet either - are the fog lamps H7's (gonna order some Hoen xenonmatches)

As a side note - wow, there ain't a lot of room behind the housings. Gotta pull off the whole housing to change a bulb?

TIA,
Greg

Default I still say that if you have bi-xenon headlights the halogens should only activate when "flashing"

as in pulling towards you on the light lever thing. Is bi-xenon an option on the S4s yet here?

Default Thats how my A8 L works, halogen for flashing and Xenon only for highs...

The B6 S4 system works exactly like the C5 A6 system (Xenon+). Same as Bi-Xenon (No Im not going to explain it), Audi on the B6 and C5, just like MB and Porsche, do not add the Extra relays to negate the different bulbs for each function. Saves complication and cost to change production. Enjoy the lights.

Default Yes, they are Xenon+.

And no, it's north worth getting the e-codes. You'd be much better off doing the clear corner mod. That is, unless you want the city-bulb option, in which case the only way to get it is to get a set of e-codes.

BTW, the fog lamp is H11, NOT H7. And yes, Hoen has them available. I bought the SPP's first, then the Hoen's, and I can't tell the difference so I left the Hoen's in. I love 'em.

And the only way to swap out the bulbs is to remove the entire housing.

Xenon+ performs like this:
Switch on Low-beams: xenon bulb illuminates.

Flash to pass with low-beams on: Shutter solenoid is activated, dropping a shutter located in front of the Xenon bulb and allows more light to escape. Also, the Halogen bulb illuminates to supplement.

Flash to pass w/o low-beams on (lights in off position): when you pull on the stick to flash, the halogen flashes only.

Activated high-beam: regardless of whether the xenon bulb is on or off, when the stalk is pushed forward, the halogen light will illuminate and stay on. If the low-beams were on, then the shutter solenoid will be activated as well, allowing more xenon light to escape.

I'll try and take some pictures tonight to show you the settings, as well as the city bulbs, which are pretty cool.

Default Xenon+ - Bi - Xenon same difference really...

Like I said in my post below, the B6 and C5 system just doesn't have the extra relays to completely separate the flash to pass and high beam function. The important part is, a halogen bulb to illuminate for flash when low beams are off and the shutter in the projector for the high beam.

Default No, Bi-xenon, by definition, is two xenon bulbs.

The Xenon+ are called "Xenon-PLUS" and NOT bi-xenon because they don't have two xenon bulbs, like the A8 does.

Anyway, I would agree with you that they are becoming synonymous.. People are going to call them bi-xenon even if they aren't bi-xenon. Just like most people call a tissue a Kleenex. ;-)

Default Common error. "Bi" is not for the number of bulbs per headlamp...

It is because the Xenon lamp can perform 2, hence the Bi-Xenon label, functions. Both as High and low (Main and Dipped beam). This can be accomplished either by a mechanical shutter in projector lamps (and the D2 A8 In europe using reflectors with a large shutter), or by motoring the headlamp farther up (Porsche pre 02 996 and all Boxster with Litronics, and Volvo HID). The A8 has 1 D2S, 1 H7 and the city light in each headlamp not including the turn signals. It is not legal in any country to have more than one HID light source per headlamp (from the manufacturer) nor would it be effective.
