Yet another Octane thread
Ok, our owners manuals say to use 91 octane, but who sells 91 anymore? You either get 89 or 93/94 around here. My past two vehicles, both 4runners, also recommended 91 octane, but I always went with 89 for everyday driving. No pinging or hesitation. Anybody putting 89 in their tanks now? Notice any diffence?

My car knocks @ low rpm on 91 octane.
I'm sure the computer would compensate if you put a lower grade in every now and then and your engine would not be harmed, but over the course of a few years, who knows?
The knock sensors are "reactionary" i.e., they listen for knocking and when they hear it they make adjustments accordingly. But basically each time you step on it from low rpms, there will be some pretty heavy pinging for a split second until the computer sorts things out. That cannot be healthy.

Re: Depends were you live. In Denver its 91.
In So Cal, I don't know where I can get anything other than 91 at the pump. No 93 anywhere. It's an emmisions issue.
Aside from going to a race shope for 100 that is.

You can run on 89 or 87 and it won't hurt the engine BUT,
performance will suffer slightly. You probably won't notice much difference with the 89,but put in the 93. ( some brands of gas do not put detergents in the lower grades) I also can normally only find 93 in my area other than Sonoco which is not that common in my area. BTW the 93 is usually less expensive than the Sonoco 91.
