Keep it to balance out (a little bit) that V8 hanging out in front.

I kept it out for a while because of the weight but my dealer told me that it was designed to reduce the impact of a rear crash. So I put it back in just in case.

Default You don't need the spare tire back there,

send me yours and I'll send you a can of fix-a-flat just like the E46 M3 has.

I also heard it was part of the rear impact crash safety. Can anybody confirm?

Default Light 17" wheel/tire--saves 12 lbs.

I sold the stock spare wheel/tire for more than the cost of a new lightweight 17" wheel and 235/45/17 from edgeracing, and saved 12 pounds.

Default It's considered part of the crash structure, but it doesn't have to be so heavy.

Like several here have done, a lighter wheel in the spare well will still provide structure in the event of a crash, while dropping a few pounds.

Unfortunately, it also will move the weight bias even further forward, slightly.
