You are very right on this. After your post, I took a look at tread width (as opposed to section width) for popular 255/35R19 winter tires. Tread width and section width (to a lesser extent) vary widely for different brand tires of the same nominal size.

I was surprised to see published tread width on 255/35R19 winter tires varies from 9 inches all the way to 10 inches, even though all the tires are the same section (255) width. The Michelin Pilot Alpine PA4 tire had the widest tread width of the models I looked at. I couldn't find any tread width data for Nokian tires.

As always, Tire Rack was a great resource. Wish they carried Nokian tires.

ECS sells the Alzor replica wheels in 18" sizes. You can get the peelers or the titanium reps (they are $99/each). I plan on going with 18" titanium reps (easier to clean) and Blizzak LM-60's in 235/45/18. Definitely want some additional sidewall for the Chicagoland roads and potholes that will be encountered over the winter months.

I keep my 19" on all winter long with all season tires and they do fine. We get a decent amount of snow here in NH.

Has anyone needed to purchase spacers for 18 or 19 inch snow tires?

IMHO, the difference between the 2, especially with Quattro and a sport dif. is insignificant. 18" tires will have a narrower(by 10 mms) contact patch and wider side wall. Probably cost less as well. BUT, the 19s will look better and will not sacrifice hardly anything in winter weather performance. Take your pick.
