I drove the M3 as well. I owned a 2002 M3, loved the car. I was looking for a daily commuter and two things drove me to lease the S4: Quattro & MPG. I needed a car that could do winter and putting snow tires on the M3 didn't sound like an option. The S4 mpg is fantastic if you're doing a long commute. I drive ~ 100 miles one way on commutes 1-2 days a week and I get around 28-29mpg. I'm usually cruising 65-75 most of the way. The new M3 is a gas pig. I also love the way the S4 pulls throughout the rev range, nice.
The M3 makes you want to drive agressively which I miss in the S4. The high revving M3 engine with awesome exhaust note also kills the S4.
I may choose an M3 when it goes to a V6 twin turbo which is rumored to be in the next version. The MPG will be more in line with the E46 M3.
Both great cars for different reasons.

IMHO Audi's are classier then BMWs especially living in LA where everyone drives a BMW.
Also, if it wasn't mentioned before, you should be comparing the Audi RS4 to the BMW M3. And comparing the Audi S4 to the BMW 335i.
