I am sorry, I am not here much, and I can't write 10 paragraphs. I have been tuning cars for a while, and some of my buddies tune Audi's (though as of yet I do not). I have a decent idea of what I am talking about.
The tune is not richer, it is richer in certain areas, like WOT or say above 10 psi or so (just guessing here, but I am likely close). The areas use use 99% of the time will likely run the same AFR as stock, thus getting pretty much exactly the same mileage as stock.

I know JHM's tune for my RS4 and B7 S4 before it (and all good all motor tunes) is not in the 14s, not in the 12s...but is a more appropriate-for-NA-power 13.0 which is bang on for safety and power all-motor. I can't say I've seen tooo many good NA tunes that are in the 12s. Maybe you meant only 'boosted cars' when you said
Most engines make best power on gasoline at about 12 - 12.5:1 AFR.
Sorry you can't write more. It would be nice to hear from you more.

I still can't figure out how to make these threads go in chronological order (never had this problem in other forums, and I am on A LOT of forums..........).
If you are talking about fuel economy at say 100-200 chp, like driving with a bit of spirit, but not near WOT. Like 3000-4500 with maybe 4 psi boost, then this is what is likely happening with the tunes:
On a non DI motor you often need to run quite rich to keep det at bay. On a DI motor you can often run things a bit leaner in the high load areas. So in the above mentioned range of driving I would venture a pretty solid guess that stock is somewhere in the 12.5 - 13:1 range, and tuned might have some slight changes to that. What those changes are might be hard to guess (if any).
If the car stock had a bit of mid load noise (beginnings of det) causing the ECU to pull timing, then they may have richened things up a bit to make the car smoother to drive, especially on the 91 tune. On the 93 tune (or especially race gas tune) they probably didn't add any fuel there as it would likely be pretty knock free in that range.
It is pretty hard to compare fuel economy of a 400+ chp car at 150 chp, since you will likely be asking for more power out of the tuned car. but if you could just get them both to put out the exact same 150 chp, the either one may get better economy, with the probability being that the higher octane tune would win.

User CP, Edit Options, In the "Thread Display Options" section there's an option called "Thread Display Mode". Change it to "Linear - Oldest First"
