Are you sure it's not noise cancellation by the speakers to reduce road noise?

Actually the best thunk sounds I ever heard was on a M35 and Hyundai Genesis sedan. The interior of these 2 cars are so quiet, I can hear my ear rings.

Tech like that, IMO, might (but by NO means definitely) still be another half decade or decade out for the A6/A6L/Q6/Q6L/S6 A7/S7 and as well.

A bit (or somewhat) off topic, but eventually, the Q6/Q6L (on the C platform beginning with the C7) will replace the AllRoad/AllRoad L (which will always only be on the C5 and C6 platforms) and Q7/Q7L (on the same platform as the Porsche Cayenne and Volkswagen Toureag).

S4s are actually amazingly quiet while cruising. If I remember correctly, Car and Driver actually had the S4 listed as being the quietest car at 70mph.

Quieter than A4? I found that car quite good on the road noise already. Only if I can tune out the SA during the test drive.

There was not anything really new in 2009 for the A4, so I don't think they reviewed it. Realistically I think they would tie, I drove an A4, and the S4 is just as quiet, a total sleeper car

In the C&D June 2009 article comparing A4, G37, TL, and 328, C&D writes the following about the A4 "Lows: Road noise, wind noise, engine noise from a four that lacks the manners expected at nearly 50 large." However, they say the 2010 s4 is quiet in a later edition.

I think the wind noise could be improved but I don't find road noise or engine noise to be an issue.

I can't speak to the amounts of sound deadening materials used, that could be the difference. I thought the A4 I drove in May of 09 was plenty quiet - just gutless. So I waited and got the S4
