DIY: Hardwired Radar Detector Install
#52
I have an A3 on order without a sun roof. I wonder if a switched hot lead is present in the light console behind the rear view mirror? If so, it would make installation of a V-1 a snap.
If you routed your wiring down the "A" pillar, did you place it behind the airbag?

I know this is an old thread but there is a significant safety issue the the way the OP installed the wiring.
By wiring it through the A - pillar the way he did, the side airbag is now hindered by the wire wrapped around it.
The proper way is to remove the A - pillar cover and put the wire behind the airbag.
This is VERY important.

This is a dumb question, but how do you remove those pink locks on the fuse harnesses to get access to the fuses? Posted this question elsewhere, but haven't gotten any responses. Thanks in advance!

Pull up around the ends. It's hard to get those off and you have to pull harder than you think.

Strange as it sounds, I found this install frustrating for a very odd reason... I was only able to get power when using the "convenience accessories" 5 amp fuse slot. All other switched fuses did not seem to jive with the V1. I spend the good part of two hours rechecking all power sources, fuses in the V1 system, and rechecking spliced wires for areas of concern. Nothing was wrong, but still power was not getting to the V1. Until I tried that last fuse...
Luckily it was hot and humid in the garage today... Ugh...

I stand corrected... It works, but it is not a switched power source. That means I have to crack it open and find a new power supply to avoid killing the battery inadvertently. Superb.
Any suggestions on what fuse spot to try? I'm using a wider tap, so most of the fuses in bay 1 won't work, since they're so narrow. Any idea why it won't work for me in other 5amp locales?...
