Default Downshift

When doing normal driving, can you just hit the downshift leaver without being in manual mode?

I.e. if I want to pass someone, can I just downshift and go? or do I have to put tranny in manual mode then downshift?

With the DSG tranny, you would need to be in manual mode to use the stick or the paddle shifters to downshift or upshift yourself. I don't believe the paddles would do anything in 'D' but I haven't tried it. The stick would only be able to go up into N or down into S from D. If you're driving in D, hit the throttle and the tranny will downshift for you. You can switch on the fly between D and manual mode easily if you wanted the occasional manual mode usage and then give the car back over to D.

Yes. This will automatically put the car into "manual" mode and allow you to use the paddle shifters. After about a minute of no manual shifting, the car returns to "auto" mode.

Wow, never knew that. Thanks clochner. It is probably covered in the manual, which I read...mostly...car is too far away to go try stuff when I'm at work...

Thanks for that part! I usually would slide the shifter back and forth from manual to auto to put it back in auto. I can't wait to try this in a few hours on my commute home.

It goes back to "auto" mode more quickly than that. I never timed it, but I would say 15 seconds. You can shorten it by flicking the gear shift lever right and left to go back to D mode.

My favorite thing, double-click to drop two gears, pass road boulder, and flick gear shift lever right to go right back to crusin'.

In manual mode you can also slam the gas to the floor and it will downshift to the lowest gear...sometimes quicker than u can get there by pulling the paddles.

Mine is always in manual mode..........of course I do have to push the clutch pedal in before I downshift.

I tried the paddles in D mode last night on the way home. It definitely works. The car switched back from M to D mode in as little as 10 sec or so if you don't touch the paddles again. This may have something to do with how much gas you're giving it too, not sure. I have to say, driving in D and taking it easy on the gas was surprising. The car went up to 7th numerous times by about 40 MPH. You can improve your gas mileage using D, but wow was it boring.

OP are you serious with this question? If so, you are driving the wrong car.
