those 255s would be more like ski's than tires on snow. It must be very hard to stop while driving too.

i found out the had way too in an 2007 S6 with stock performance tires. Put it right into a snow drift at low speed. $1500 in radiator damage etc. I have all seasons on the 2009 A8L, they are ok, but snows make the car a uber snow go-mobile.

I have a BMW 545i, living just west of Philly. I put Blizzak snow tires on and they're great in the snow. I plan to get all season's for next winter when I'll have the S4.

All seasons on a 2nd set of wheels works well for me. I live in the SF Bay Area and travel to Tahoe several times during the winter. From Dec-Mar (~120 days), I'll spend maybe a dozen days in Tahoe at sub-40 degree temps. I can't use summer-only tires for those trips, but only some of those days involve any snow, so overall probably 95% of my days in the winter months are snow-free. So snow tires seem like overkill for my situation.

FWIW, I like the 19s that came with the car, and I want the max performance of the summer tires when I can I have it. Swapping tires apparently causes problems and the profile of 18" tires probably functions better in the snow. Also, I was able to get decent 18" all seasons with high ratings for snow for pretty cheap, and the cost difference over 19" tires payed for a lot of the expense of a set of after-market 18" wheels.
