The key is varying the RPMs. And there's certainly nothing wrong with that.
Talked to several techs and mechanics at Ingolstadt during my Euro Delivery, all recommend varying RPMs as the key.
Let's face it, it's going to be hard to drive it less than 3000 RPM all the time anyway. So enjoy the car!
I've advocated WOT to redline. I assure you if you take your new THOROUGHLY WARMED UP ENGINE to the redline. NOTHING unusual or detrimental will happen. In fact, they've already done that at the factory. There is a rev limiter to prevent over revving. Took all of my cars over the last 15 yrs to redline and the engine just runs smoothly. BUT, I wouldn't leave it at redline for more than a second or so. IMHO, the engine braking is the most important part of the process. It forces the piston rings against the cylinder walls. So if you are afraid to take your car to the redline. WOT just shy of the redline.

It will get even better. Although the break in period technically is 1k miles, the engine will continue to "wear in for another" 4K miles or so. The first 1k miles are especially crucial for piston ring seating. But other parts need more miles to wear in and loosen up. Non engine parts as well.
