Default How accurate is TMV pricing on used S4s?

Hi all, I'm looking to join the S4 club. I found the 2010 S4 below, 40,000 miles, listed for $37,800 locally. Edmunds TMV values it at around $34,500 for dealer price. The dealer only budged $300 because I pointed out that the aftermarket grill install was a bit sloppy, but said they don't negotiate. I told him I wouldn't go above the TMV for the car, and he just reiterated they don't negotiate, so I gave him my number and left.

So I'm trying to get a feel for whether this is a good price. On Cars.com, ask prices for similar miles and equipped vehicles vary from 35-41k, so it is towards the lower ask range, but TMV would suggest it should be significantly lower. I've heard that TMV undervalues used cars though, so I'm not sure. Any advice from others who've bought used S4s as to whether TMV undervalues them? And whether this is a good deal? Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately, all of the internet used car value sites are at best, indicators. They don't necessarily keep up with the latest supply or demand in any given locale and are especially less sensitive to lower production vehicles like the S4. Cars.com seems to be a bit more on top of the latest data but again, it's a range indicator. Used cars values are always going to be subjective, particularly with the variable of condition being so large a factor.

As for whether or not that price is a good deal, others can chime in with their opinion but in the end, only you can decide based on comparing other similar used S4s that are available in the marketplace.

As stated above, Edmunds TMV is not a good indicator of used car prices. This was recently debated on R8Talk. TMV for a 2008 R8 was listed at 45-50,000 LOL. The Manheim auction prices, which is what dealers are truly paying for an R8 are at 80-90,000. Compare asking prices in your area to get a true feel for the value.

Any advice on what these asking prices mean? I.e., if they range from $36k - $42k, does that mean I should be happy to pay $37k, or should I refuse to pay anything more than $36k?

It always depends on the condition of the car. If the car is flawless you will most likely ending up in the upper range but then you'll be the judge to whether you are paying more for a great car or to say you'll take a car that has a few dents and scratches but paying less money for it. Let's not forget the mileage factor...less miles more money, it's that simple.

Go onto autotrader.com and search for s4s in a 500 mile distance. That should give you an idea of what the ASKING price ranges will be. Newer, lower mileage, well equipped cars will generally fetch a higher price. If you find one that looks interesting, call about it. Make an offer contingent on your final inspection and a Carfax. Be prepared to drive an hr or two to get one that matches your desires and fits your price range. S4s are in short supply and high demand. A 3 yr old model is mechanically the same as a new one. They are also in demand since they can easily be tuned. Make sure you get a warranty and realize if the car has been tuned, Audi will void your warranty on the first service appointment.
