To really know when the engine is thoroughly warmed up, buy a vag-com cable (or find someone nearby that has one) and enable the oil temperature display (which comes with enabling the lap timer). Wait until the oil temp is over 200*F, which happens roughly 10 minutes later than when the coolant reaches temperature (depending on how cold (or warm) the car was to start with).

I usually wait until it reads about 210*F before I go over about 3k rpm but 200*F is probably fine, as someone mentioned in another thread.

As a side note, anyone seen the gauge displays in the Dodge SRT-8's? Very nice, and wish we had as much real-time monitoring in dash.

If you want to see an awesome HUD, take a look at what Ford is putting on the 2013 GT500. It's got all kinds of track apps on it, build in drag racing tree, etc.

I wouldn't touch one with a barge pole ... but that's me...

I'm in the camp of following the manufacturers recommended break-in with a slightly more aggressive protocol. Really more impatience than anything. 3 new Hondas, 2 new Nissans, 3 new BMWs and 2 New Audis and zero engine problems after 100,000+ kms each (well, except for the 2011 S4 and 2012 Q7 Sport...time will tell). No excessive oil consumption (actually...never needed to add oil ever between changes) and no problems with uneven or reduced compression. My experience tells me not to change my break-in protocol.

Anyone interested is what Audi does to test every Audi R8 engine before it gets installed into the vehicle?

This should make us all feel more comfortable about running our engines near redline on the day we pick up our brand new S4. Check out the glowing pipes near the end of the video.

Nice vid.

But I really don't think this has anything to do with S4. Audi will not test every S4 engine like this. 3.0 TFSI is in almost every Audi car now, e.g. S4, S5 cab, A6, A7, etc.

Meh. Unless you build your own car, chances are that someone else runs it hard before you get it. Those 25-50mi that your car comes with are not guaranteed to be driven the way you'd like.

Warm it up, run it hard, vary the RPMs and don't worry about it - that's what I did.

Used Audi's -> added oil few times in 35Km. Switching to "hard" method on second B8 to see differences in oil consumption and MPG. Will report back in 10K miles. ^^ BTW, for all BMWs I ever owned, I never really thought about how to break it in, just drove like they were designed to ... and never added oil but changed in scheduled maintenance.
