Default How long does your S4 take to start? (crank time)

Hi, just wondering how long it takes for your S4 to start-up? I came from a repurchased BMW 335 that had it's HPFP replaced 4 times and every time I sense a long crank time I get nightmares. I think my car is fine, but it consistently takes about 2 seconds to start. I push the start button and the gauge goes up to the max and crank for about 1.5 to 2 seconds and start. It's consistent though and not longer or shorter. My 335, when working, would be instant as soon as I pressed the start button.

Mine takes a little more than a second to start up - "bup-bup-bup-vroom". Very consistent. I didn't really notice a difference from my 335 to the S4 - but then again, I didn't look for it either. I was lucky and my very early 335i never had a single HPFP problem. My S4 one time did the long crank thing which scared me quite a bit - but did catch and seems to have just been a fluke since it's run perfect for the last few thousand miles since that happened.

Yeah mine cranks a moment or two longer than my previous 330 or my wife's X5. I thought it was a bit odd at first, but it seems to be very consistent - maybe because the compression ratio is higher and it's cranking over the SC?

It's the direct injection guys, my 2.0T FSI A4 did the same thing as has every direct injection car I've ever driven. Don't sweat it.

I had one HPFP replaced in my previous 135i so I completely understand. So far no issues with the S4. I think my HPFP was on the way out when I traded the One series in. I really hope this car doesn't have any stupid issues like the BMW did. I remember my 02 A4 had coil pack issues and my 06 A4 3.2 had exhaust lifter issue.

Same here. But, my S4 entertains me during the start-up sequence with multi-colored lights, 360 spins on the RPM & speedo gauges, graphic representation of Nav initialization (probably the hard drive booting up), etc.

With the Prestige package, I get to start it all up with the push of a button. After Nav has initialized, I finish the start up sequence by saying "Map on" to pull up the 3D map.

It's like a frigging shuttle launch and impresses my friends and neighbors. Yes, it's all over-the-top and quite unnecessary, but *so* much fun!

P.S. With this sound & light show going on, I don't notice the cheaper looking dash quite so much...

Yup I noticed the delay as well compared to my 335. I assumed it's normal - no biggy.

Do you guys hear that short electric motor sound right after you open the drivers door? My service dept told me that is the fuel pump, priming and bringing the direct injection system up to full pressure so the car will start faster.

Do the direct injection BMW's do this???

When my S4 is starting cold there is a slight delay compared when the motor is fully warmed up. When warm it almost starts immediately.
