They are for coins as the bottom of each groove has a radius to cradle the coins. Problem is they roll right out under hard acceleration and roll where the sun doesn't shine.
Shame because it is convenient if it worked better.
Should have had a thin strip of urethane on each side to provide some resistance.
hey I have an idea.......gotta go

here is what SA told me...
That is a sensor used for the heating and cooling system. it is mainly utilized when you use the Auto option, to get the right temperature in the car as fast as possible. There is another one on your dash board, I believe. Please make sure that no one puts any coins in it.

i THINK there is foam in the bottom of it, kinda weird and always bugged me. almost like it was a microphone or something.
my 9 year old put coins in it and it keeps them there nicely.
always wondered what it is too.

I think the main reason they put that coin holder thing in there is that they could manufacture the same center console piece for left hand drive and right hand drive markets. For LHD markets, the parking brake lever is on the left side and for RHD markets, they can switch over the coin holder to the left side and put the parking brake lever where the coin holder is in the picture the OP has. It's actually a smart solution to minimize having to make 2 separate trim pieces.
