Interior Center Console Question - What is this?
#23
1: Use the phone function in your car to talk to someone you know
2: Turn on the AC to auto
3: Place coins in the slots
-Pour hot coffee in the slots and see if the person you are talking to thinks that you sound like you are under water, if not, notice if the AC automatically turns the cooling fan High and tries to cool the cabin due to the hot coffee, if nothing happens it must be a coin slot.
But seriously, I have also been told by a service rep that it is a sensor/thermostat, while the sales rep says a coin holder.

It is a coin holder. Coins are more used/popular in Europe and they didn't bother to make it something else for the US.

Plus as was pointed out before it allows for LHD RHD to us the same parts.
The HVAC sensor is on the center dash above the "AC" button.
The Bluetooth mic is in the overhead console.
The coffee disposal is between the steering wheel and the driver's seat.

I assumed it was some sort of sensor. But, clearly it has a solid bottom covered by foam. It wouldn't be too smart to have a sensor lie flat, where dust and french fry dust could clog it. Takes up a lot of real estate, but I suppose it make the console look more techie than a big blank space. I tell anyone who asks that it's a fart detector and if it senses a fart, an announcement is made, indicating where it came from.

Coin slot
I would be real worried about an Audi service tech telling you it's a sensor/thermostat. The bottom is solid. Plus any horizontal sensor would quickly get covered with dust, get stuff spilled in it, etc.
