By my experience-NO!
First time I brought it in for 5K service/waterpump,I let them wash it through their little automated car wash since it was winter(COLD!)and dirty has hell- found a big 10" scratch on left rear door not to mention waterspots all over from improperly drying.
They had to bring it to their body shop to glaze and compound it out.Car is at the dealer now for a few minor fix's and I just tell them to not wash it.

Absolutely not. Didn't let them "detail" mine when I bought it and won't let them wash it when I bring it in, especially after I noticed them running all the cars through machine washes with those blue nylon scrubbers. Swirls anyone?
The only people that may wash my car are me and my detailer.

Well, they did detail it for delivery and it looked absolutely perfect, so maybe I have a fighting chance with my dealer. Thing is, they are fixing a small paint defect (paint scraped off on small spot of front edge lower front bumper), so I think they have to wash it first.
Fingers crossed....

This is an easy one: NO.
I personally wouldn't even let them detail the car for initial delivery. The will compound the crap out of any scratches/imperfections from shipping. What do they care? They want the best results in the least amount of time.
As some others have mentioned, many dealers have automatic car washes whose sole purpose is to introduce swirls into your paint.
If you don't plan to keep the car, are lazy (don't want to wash yourself) or aren't picky -- I guess you could let them wash your car.

I would point out that some colors are more susceptible to swirls than others. Solid, darker, non-metallic colors like black and red will show swirls more readily than lighter, metallic colors.
We've run my wife's silver car through car washes for 4 years now and it looks good as new. My red car even gets near a car wash and it starts to swirl.

I guess the upside of my A4's CONSTANT trips to the dealer is that I don't have to wash it as often.
