Default Manual and no sports Diff Vs. DSG and Sports Diff

All,

Thoughts on buying either a manual car with no sports diff and a dsg car with sports diff?

5 track days and 5 autocrosses a year.

rest is some commuting and trips to tahoe

Well what about a manual car with sport diff vs. a DSG with no sport diff??

Seriously, though, whatever trans you go with, definitely get the sport diff. It's easily the best upgrade option for this car.

That is all I am finding within 500 miles of my house and don't want to spend 1k shipping the car to me.

its down to those two cars, and the manual is also 4.5k cheaper which is nice.

Ahh gotcha. Makes sense now.

Since you plan on tracking your car regularly, I say go with the DSG w/ Sport Diff. You're basically getting the best of both worlds that way. The sport diff helps correct understeer, and the DSG performs like a CHAMP on the track. I did one weekend track event last year and was blown away at how awesome it is to downshift instantaneously coming out of a corner. It's really a fantastic piece of engineering.

But . . . I know there are some die-hard manual guys on here who will prolly disagree with me.

When on the track in manual mode was it trying to upshift and downshift without your input?

Does your chip on the car allow you to left foot brake without killing the gas?

Very helpful thank you

The car always upshifts at redline, even if you are in manual mode. Not necessarily a bad thing if you're on the track and forget to shift. It won't, however, downshift automatically on a track. You'll be braking too hard and fast for the TCU to automatically shift to a lower gear. This is opposed to just cruising in manual mode on a regular street - in which case the car will downshift as you slowly come to a stop.

Little confused by your second question - don't think I've done that before.

Sport diff = required! I drove both, and the non-diff pushes like crazy through corners... Sport diff feels very neutral. This is one of the defining options on this car IMO.

Having the manual and the sport diff, I'd say get the DSG and sport diff. I love both, but sport diff is more enjoyable

All wheel drive cars like a little left foot braking to rotate the car (traction dependent)

I read that without an engine chip the car kills any throttle when the brake is applied.

DSG is nice for everyday use in SF, I just wonder how much im going to miss the manual in both day to day and track driving. Really wish someone would get a chip made to clean up the annoying things the DSG does

I'm a die hard MT guy. But I would not advise buying the S4 without the Sport dif ESPECIALLY if you are going to track the car. BTW, the DSG IS a manual trans. Just doesn't have a clutch pedal
