Can the MMI play mp3's/video directly off a SD card or do you need to import it into the Jukebox first? Just wondering before i spend some $$ on buyin a new SD card. 32 GB is max size it can accept?

You can play MP3s directly off of the SD card. Importing them into the built-in hard drive is optional and makes sense if you want to have some of your favorite songs available while you swap out a different SD card. It is less of a need if you have the 3G MMI with Navigation, as it provides a second SD slot.
Right now, the SD slot is only SD/SDHC compatible and has yet to be updated to support SDXC cards. SDXC cards are required for anything above 32GB.

awesome thanks! Yes i have 2 card slots in my 2011 car.
Is it ok to leave the memory cards in the slots while i'm parked outside in the hot sun?

While we haven't had too many hot days in the Pacific NW, or at least since getting my S5 this past August, I can't really speak on that. I know that I've had the same 4GB and 32GB cards since then and they haven't experienced any problems in 80-odd or 20-odd degree weather.
If you are really concerned about it, I would check on the specifications of the cards you have to see what their supported operating temperature ranges are. Not all manufacturers provide that, but it will give you some idea of what the cards can handle.

Here are some of the specified temperature ranges for Kingston SDHC and microSDHC cards:
