Default Need help installing VAG-COM

I have a 2010 S4 and just purchaseed VAG-COM HEX-USB-CAN cable. I also picked up a new Acer laptop (1.6 GHz 512 KB L2 cache, 2 GB memory, 160 GB HD) running Windows 7 (much to my lament). I've tried installing VAG-VOM release 8.1 and it will not run the installer, wrong file type/format or something like that; don't recall the exact message. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong or how to proceed? I'm assuming that I've got the wrong insaller, but...? Thanks!

P.S. I also posted this request over here https://www.audiworld.com/forums/sho...1#post23912361

you should be running 9.08.1. Mine is on Vista Buisness, works fine with HEX-USB-CAN cable. Not sure if VAG-COM (VCDS) will run with windows 7. Check Ross-Tech site.

There is a note saying that it will run with Windows 7 but I've had no luck getting the install file to run. I've got to be missing something simple, but...very frustrating. May return the damn laptop tomorrow.

Remember, you need to install the SW, "before" you plug in the VAG cable. If you have not done this, remove VCDS and follow this behavior.

Thanks, but I haven't even plugged in the cable. Windows 7 doesn't recognize the install file I downloaded and won't run it.

MalSer, I don't have a VAG-COM (yet) but I have just downloaded VCDS release 908.1 from RossTech's web site and it installed just fine on my Win7 machine.

What error do you see?

FWIW, I downloaded VCDS from here:

That's the same download I'm using, but I re-downloaded it anyway to be sure. The error message remains the same: "The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86(32-bit) or x64(64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher." I checked the laptop and it's running a 64 bit operating system. Any idea what I need to do besides contact Ross-Tech? I was hoping to work on learning V-C this weekend.
