Default Oil Choice and Change

So for whatever reason 3 of my local shops were all out of the oil I like to use (Castrol SAE 5w-40)! So in its absence, I ended up getting 7 quarts of Mobil 0w-40 which meets the VW502.00 spec, but haven't used it before.

Before I do my oil change, was just wondering if anyone else uses or has used Mobil 0w-40.

Thx

You will be good to go with Mobile 1 0w40. There are a few threads about oil selection and analysis if you do a search on here.

M1 0W40 is a very good oil. Many 502 VW oil analysis fanatics choose this one as their go to oil on BITOG forum. I think you will like it and your engine will too.

How about the Mobil 1 5W30? Almost as good for South Jersey? I just picked some up for $25 for 6 quarts.

I've looked at 3 versions of the M1 5w30 on the Mobil website...

1. Standard Mobil 1
2. Extended Performance
3. High Mileage

As far as I can tell non of these oils are VW 502 approved oils.

The only M1 5w30 approved oil is the Syst S Special V and I'm pretty confident that oil is not available in the USA.

If you are going to use that 5w30 oil I would use it in a shorter oil change interval...better to return it if you can and get some German Castrol 0w30 from AutoZone or the Mobil 1 0W40. If you can find some Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5w40 that would be a great choice also. I'm using AMSoil Euro 5w40 and have had great wear results from the oil analysis I do each oil change. Those would be my top 4 oil choices based on what I know and the research I've done/oil analysis results I've seen.

Hmmm, the box just says Advanced Full Synthetic. I thought I did see it listed as VW 502 approved. Maybe it will end up in my wife's Explorer.....

I hate to say this but I would check to make sure that oil is approved for the Explorer. Most late model Ford engines are specifying 5w20 oils to be used. You would probably still be OK using that oil in the Ford (better choice than in the Audi, IMO)... I just want you to be aware in the unlikely event of engine trouble and the dealership points to the oil.

The standard versions of Mobil 1 5W30 sold in the USA are not certified against VAG 502.00.

Pepboi does carry a Euro version (in litre size) that meets VAG 504.00/507.00, which is the product required in the TDI motor.

Mobil 1 has a webpage to select the proper Mobil 1 oil for your car. There is only one US version of Mobil 1 recommened for the 2011 S4. Generally if the oil is VW 502 approved it will be marked on the container.
