Is the dipstick calibrated for hot or cold oil? I know that the sensor is hot and off, but is the stick the same? I'm used to dry sump cars (911 and quattroporte) tested hot and running, but most engine sump dipsticks I've had are cold and off.

Engine off long enough for the oil to run down to the sump on level ground. Temp shouldn't make any difference.

I'm surprised that temp makes no difference. In my Maserati and Porsches, temp was significant because of the volume expansion of the hot oil. Admittedly, they oil capacities was high, esp on the carerras, so the effect was hightened.

Actually, you're probably correct on the expansion. When you select the oil gauge in the MMI settings, if the car is cold, it states it must be checked when the engine is warm. In fact, it won't provide a readout until it reaches operating temp. So I stand corrected.

As an aside, I had purchased a dipstick awhile back and the oil measurement closely matches the MMI electronic readout on my A6. Still nice to be able to confirm the MMI reading though.

My '11 had an issue with the hood sensor in the first 7500 miles, which caused an incorrect oil reading from the computer. The computer relies on the hood sensor to detect if the hood has been opened and to reset the level readings. In my case, the car hit the Low Oil Level point and adding oil didn't register an increase in the computer. The warning stayed on and I had to take it to the dealer to have the sensor fixed and oil level checked.

After that, I immediately bought the dipstick from ECS.

Are you guys replacing the cap with the dipstick, or leaving the cap in for daily driving, and checking with the dipstick occasionally? Is there any reason to not just ditch the cap and replace it with the dipstick?
Thanks

I ditched the cap and left the stick in full time. It's designed for that.

Checking... is this the correct one? For some reason I thought these cost more.

That's the one. The price fluctuates on ECS based on stock and supplier, from what they've said in the past.
