It was called a CAGS unit. Made specifically to get a higher EPA gas mileage rating. Could be unplugged by the owner. But as said before, during light acceleration , the shift automatically went first to fourth gear.

Aahhhh, see I thought you were still talking about a MT. I completely understand an Auto doing that.

This is very true. I had a 2008 Z06 and learned about it the hard way. If you tried shifting from 1-2 and the RPM's were lower than 2800(I think) there was a light that would come on that read 1-4. It was meant for you to go from 1st to 4th. But i never liked it. It almost felt like you had to force it in to 4th. So I always let the RPM's go above 3000 in first before I would shift 1st to 2nd.

My 2012 CTS-V does this... it'll force you to shift to 4th if it wants to. However, you have to be really accelerating slowly... like SUPER slow. It's really hard to do actually and I've only had it "kick in" 3-4 times since I bought the car 6 months ago.

It is however pretty damn annoying when it does happen, because if you're like me and just shifting out of habit, a sudden change on where the stick is going is confusing and breaks your train of thought as you try to grab 2nd and the damn car is fighting to put it into 4th.

It's hasn't happened enough for me to buy the "module" but I can see why people do it. I have a feeling they've dialed it back quite a bit from what has been going on with the Corvettes.
