I only have 400 miles on my S4 and I am currently doing a hard break-in. Thing is I work a lot and don't have time to drive much, and it looks like I won't be able to get it over 1000 miles before end of this month. I want to take advantage of the sale at APR for the ECU tune. I called them up and told me they recommend at least 1000 miles before the ECU tune. Is there a rule for something like that or if I get it to may be 600 miles, should it be okay? I don't see what's the big deal.

I personally put my prior cars on the dyno just for some #'s and also to stress the engine, and had the runs datalogged to ensure there aren't any existing problems with the car. Tuning a car with pre-existing problems is not a good idea.

Might just be so that it corresponds roughly to the recommended break in period. They know most people will violate the break in conditions once they get the tune ;o)
Probably best to call them and ask if that's the reaon.

You have 2 weeks to put on 600 miles. Take a weekend trip to Montreal with your savings and get her done! I did my GTI when it was relatively new. It now has 172,000 km on the odometer, no issues.

Does the tune actually need to be performed by the end of the month or you just need to pay for it? Ask them if you can send it at the end of this month but pay for it now. Hard to believe any business would say no.

+1, you should be able to pay now, do the FLASH later. Others have done it.

Won't matter to be honest, you could put the tune in day 1 at zero miles and it won't harm anything. Sure it will make throttle tip in more sensitive and give you more power, but you still are in full control of your foot and can keep it out of the pedal. The tune doesn't make the car only drivable shooting to redline

At least two the B8 S4 3.0T engines self destructed (without an ECU tune) at less than 1k miles. The warranty discussion with the Dealer and Audi might have been a little more testy in those cases, if the ECU tune was present,at the the time. If Audi wants to know bad enough, they can figure out if the ECU was tuned.
Some people are risk takers some are not. That is for you to decide. Most likely you could get a tune right now and never have a problem, or you could be the one in 100,000 people, that has an issue (not even related to the ECU tune).

It is really just a personal decision, to tune the ECU, with only 1k miles on the engine.

Im having my GTI tuned straight from the dealership. I am having it Dyno'd first for a baseline and to ensure there are no engine problems.
