Default overheating... not a good sign

So im driving around yesterday and out of no where i get an alert " Turn engine off and check coolant", first thing that goes threw my mind is f**k. I though my water pump blew, and obviously to my luck it was Friday, Christmas eve... So as instructed, i turned my engine off and opened my hood. I was ready for a dirty sight, coolant all over the engine, Thankfully that wasn't the issue and the coolant level seemed to be fine, right on the minimum line after engine shut off... I let the car cool for a few minutes and put it back on. The temp. indicator rose above normal but i noticed if i put the interior heat on the car temp. would drop. Called Audi service and got to speak to a service rep. Turns out the water pump isnt the only common issue with these cars, If its not your water pump its your thermostat.

Bottom line i schedule an appointment with Audi for Monday but having second thougsh about it. I dont really feel like dropping my car off unless its necessary, and a thermostat replacement isnt an expensive job. So im considering just bringing the car to my trusted mechanic and having him replace the piece.

So does the thermostat in these cars fail closed?

IIRC, in my e46 BMW, the thermostat was designed to fail open (so your car wouldn't overheat).

my guess is that they will not replace the WP unless it is not working. Whether we like it or not, their current supply only allows for the replacement of busted pumps.

That's why the RVU was pulled back.

Can't hurt to ask, but don't be surprised.....

The thermostat SHOULD fail open. The thermostat is cheap part but it is usually very expensive to replace because of where it's located.

That's what I did. I harassed them so much about the WP six months previously, that they replaced it - though it never blew or failed as far as I know!

but didn't you have yours done long before the shortage of replacement pumps, which would have been the last 60-70 days or so?

That sucks bro. If I were you I would take it in for free. I hear the location of the thermo in this car is not a nice place
