Radar Roy says mount it low. http://www.radardetector.org/radar-d...r-users-guide/

Detecting laser is pretty pointless. Once you detect it, if you detect it, it's too late. Hardwiring a detector up high, behind the tint strip, keeps it cool, gives it better detection range, and keeps it out of the eyes of thieves.

The times I have been hit with laser, my high-mounted V1 alerted. Mounting high is much better IMO. If one wants protection from laser, they should get a good jammer (Laser Interceptor/Blinder).

First off, is the 9500ci work just as well if not better becuase the look of it is defintalily 10000x better than the 9500xi, but do you think its worth the cost and if i hard wire the xi, will i be able to take it out and put it in my glove box for theft reasons?

If you're looking into a Passport 9500ix, thought you might be interested in getting one with a RED display to match our interior lighting rather than the BLUE one that the 9500ix comes with... (I spoke with a CS rep who informed me that they don't plan on making a red display version).

You can purchase a RED 9500i and have Escort upgrade it to the 9500ix (http://www.escortradar.com/9500iupgrade.php).

The Upgrade Will Include:

* Replace the PASSPORT 9500i case with the PASSPORT 9500ix case
* Hardware and software changes
* Upgraded memory chip to add three times more memory, to store Autolearn locations along with thousands of Safety Camera Locations, including red light and speed-based cameras throughout North America.
* Save your existing Marked Locations and merge them with the most recent DEFENDER Database update
* Verify detector is internet ready and communicates with a Windows based computer for the latest software and database updates from our website
* Test radar sensitivity, laser sensitivity, and verify all other features work properly.
* New Case, SmartCord, Windshield Mount, PASSPORT 9500ix owners manual and KeyCode: Brand new accessories for your Passport 9500ix--it's essentially a brand new radar detector!
* Free Return Shipping
* A Free 3 year Location Database Subscription so you can keep current with monthly updates ($29.95 value)
If you can find a cheap 9500i, doing the upgrade path is cheaper than getting the 9500ix AND you basically get a brand new radar detector (new casing if the old one has any scratches as well all the accessories) WITH the red display to match the S4 interior lighting!

Hardwiring just means you have the power cord connected to the car through the fuse box or spliced into an existing wire rather than using the cigarette port. So yes, you can unplug the XI and put it in your glovebox (while the power cord remains hardwired to the car)

Sorry, my car is at the shop (coolant way low so hopefully the H20 pump will be replaced) so I can't get pics just yet. Anyway here are my thoughts about the mounting:

Having it way up on the visor probably does reduce the sensitivity a bit but it still seems to go off enough before the crest the hill or round the corner. It may reduce the laser but that is pretty much worthless and just give me a heart attack each time it goes off (I turned that part off for a few years). Really for me it was a trade off of the odds of getting a ticket vs. the odds of having a break-in because someone saw the detector. I had mine up by the mirror when I first got the car and was broken into before I made the first payment so that obviously biased my mounting choice. Plus if a cop sees the detector when you are pulled over, well, let's just say any chances of a warning only are gone.

I've had my 8500 for 9+ years and it has saved my a** MANY times. Yes, I have been pulled over quite a few times too but I'd like to think that the 8500 has at least paid for itself by reducing that number

Here are the pictures (finally). You can see that the visor only goes to straight down when in front but still swivels to the side just fine. I ran the cord back through the visor mount so it goes right by the hinge.
