Not true, in general. The point of polarized sunglasses is to cut down glare reflected from the ground. This glare will tend to be horizontally polarized (IIRC), so sunglasses are vertically polarized.

Knowing this, a smart display designer will arrange his display to be vertically polarized, if he knows what orientation the display will have when in use.

I have enough different display devices in my car that I don't take chances - I use non-polarized prescription sunglasses. Usually requires a bit of argument with the optician.
