Road & Track - S4 vs. Boxster Spyder

Wow. To gain 3 seconds on the B8 S4 you need to drop 900 lbs and in the process two doors, two seats, a roof, door handles, a trunk, and just about all daily driver practicality. While there's certainly something to be said for the fun factor of driving a tossible little convertible, this just goes to show how awesome of a job Audi did with the S4 to be in the same league.
Take the $10,000 you'd save on the S4 over the Boxster Spyder, put it into some mods and you'll see that time difference drop even more.

I think it's an awesome article for the B8 S4. This is NOT a traditional comparison ...this is a 'wow...you can get sports car performance in 4 door sedans' article, and is a gigantic compliment to the S4. They were STUNNNED by what the S4 did when they tested it last year. This is a followup to that to show just how absurdly good it is as a performer.
How that went over your head, I will never understand.

Ultimately people do care about $20k difference in price in the $40 to $70k range.
Yes, I understand that the press is good, but as a knowledgeable driver these kind of comparison pieces make little sense.... especially when they get 4.4s 0-60 vs. 5.1s 0-62 in Nov 2008.

If they were doing the "wow", then they should have just put in there the 4 door M3 or C63 which cost the same. Or, they should have switched the Boxster with the Mustang.

re 0-60 times, who gives a crap about 0-60 times anyway? Hardly an effective measure of a car's power etc. It's a first and second gear sprint. My car ran off a couple of 4.36 0-60 times one day in the cold, then was 4.8 on a warm day. There's certainly variation day to day....let alone car to car and 3 years ago to today.
Further in 08 wasn't that a 7 speed DSG...that needs a 2-3 change in there to hit 60? And didn't the 2010 test show 4.5 seconds on a MT6 car where they dumped the clutch from the short rev limiter?
In any event, I found it entertaining and loved that an Audi sedan is slogging about with a killer mid-engined sports car like the boxster.
p.s. re the M3...Car and Driver did something like that. M3 vs. GT 5.0. Went well for the GT. Still, thousands of people said 'OMG WHY ARE THEY COMPARING THESE'. That's the whole thing. Check this Mustang out. Wow. Same as here

OK, but why then not go with with the base model Boxster that starts at $45k....that seems fair....

I think it was a great review but a bit of nonsense since most people are not going to cross-shop a 2 seater with a 4 seater. However someone should be embarrassed to pay 14k more for a smaller lighter car that only does .1 better in the quarter. This is really because Porsche is trying to protect their 911's from the potentially better performing mid-engine Boxter and Cayman. I notice that the Porsche has much better stopping and speed in the skidpad which should be expected.
