Hi All:
I was discussing the S4 with a friend today, and he asked me if I knew what the top speed of the S4 would be without any speed/engine governor. I know Audi governs to 155, but have any of the car magazines tested the car without the limiter in place?
Thanks in advance for any insight.
Michael

According to the redline and gearing, 183mph would techincally be achieved at redline on a 6MT, but considering windspeed drag can affect this, I'm not sure.

Not that I am aware of, I know that one of the features of the MTM Cantronic piggyback ECU hack is to remove the 155mph limiter, so I would assume that is for a reason (being that you could exceed that). In the thread I referenced, someone took their B5 S4 up to 185 on the Autobahn, so...

A good question. I would say that 183 is an optimistic number.
I think even 170 would be a nice achievement, as it takes quite a bit of HP to get into the 180's. Top speed is very much representative of pure HP. And if you do some research, I would venture to say that most cars that run over 180 have at least 400hp.
Also keep in mind that the indicated speed is typically higher than actual.
The S4 is not unusually aerodynamic as far as I know.
BTW - just pulled the trigger on a Black on Black 2010 S4 today. Only options, black leather and sport diff, being built in Nov. Yahoo!!!

whoops, I meant March. The dealer said they had put the order in for it in Nov and had a Mar build date. I had them add the seat option to the order.
Surprising that it would take so long. I was on the fence between the S4 and a 335d. The Bimmer was going to take just 6-8 weeks.

Lou posted on that thread I linked above saying he has seen 165 in a Youtube vid, and that 175 seems feasible - Lou knows his stuff, so I don't dispute this

The B5 S4 is geared almost identically to the B8 S4. If you have enough power (and RPM limiter raised), can get to 185 MPH. My rough calc is that you need 343 WHP to get to 185 MPH from drag and friction. The stock 290 WHP should get you to around 173 MPH.

An interesting C&D article reads that top speed is 183 according to "...sources in Ingolstadt."
That would be very impressive, and would lead me to believe that there's more than 333 horses under the hood. The gearing would have to be matched pretty well also.
