Cool. Thnx for the correction. I was going off of the Car & Driver article and didn't realize the U.S. had only manual.

2 completely different cars. Both are great . But do you want a 4 dr luxo performance car of a 2 seat sports car. No wrong answer. Its all about what YOU want.

The sense I'm getting is what I suspected: I should do whatever it takes to get a test on the TTS, and if it's not "sporting enough" revert to the S......

I wish the TT RS had the s tronic. That'd make the decision easy. No flames please: I've got a 911 6 speed and a VW R32 DSG; I ain't afraid of the manual, I'm impressed with the dual clutch....

I might be trading the S in for a TTRS if I can get around to pricing and it works

One point of reference, the Car and Driver lightning lap at VIR.
S4 3:10.8
TTS 3:08.4

That's remarkably close for a car that weighs 4000 lbs vs one that weighs 3250 lbs. A 700+ lbs weight advantage equals a huge amount of horsepower. Just goes to show how much the S4 does right in the handling department with a great weight distribution, huge stock brakes, and a trick torque vectoring rear diff.

Chip that S4 and I'd be willing to bet it would be at 3:08.4 or better, too.

The TTS might be more nimble going into a corner, but the power that a S4 can put down coming out of a corner is awe inspiring.

All depends on what you're after.

If a TTRS is in the cards, and you really don't need the extra space or headroom of an S4, yeah that's gonna be a hellova ride.

Seems pretty close to me. I'd guess the TTS is a little more agile on a track but the S4 would be better on normal roads due to the power advantages.

The TT-RS is a step above them both:

2.0T + DSG is a fantastic powertrain. I haven't driven the 265HP version, but even the 200HP version feels great in a sufficiently light car, which the TT is.

I really wanted to order a TT-S, but I knew it wouldn't be sufficiently practical, so when the B8 S4 was announced the decision was easy. I feel like I can say for certain that I'd prefer the driving feel of the TT-S more than the S4. On the other hand, I will say this, superficial though it may be: every time I see a TT I can't help but think how feminine a car it is, and how much cooler the S4 looks.

Keyes Audi in Van Nuys, CA had a TT-RS a few months ago for customers to test drive. Wonder if any of those people are on here and can provide feedback.
