Default S4 vs. S5

So, I've been away for a while (moving, new job, etc.), so maybe this has been commented on already.

Anyhow, I was reading about the forthcoming S6 and became curious about the S5 as compared to the S4. According to Audi's website: the S5 weighs 66lbs LESS than the S4, has 21hp MORE than the S4, the SAME torque, and the SAME 0-60 time (4.9 seconds).

Why isn't a lighter car with more horsepower any faster in that regard?

Well, the S4 is generally accepted to be underrated at 333HP. Also peak power doesn't mean much. The area under the power curve is more important.

The weight numbers are not in the same order S4 vs. S5 on the website.
S4 S-Tronic = 3924
S5 Tiptronic = 3924
S4 Manual = 3847
S5 Manual = 3858
You were comparing Manual S5 to S-Tronic S4 which is why you see the 66 lb discrepancy.
As for power the number...the website reports peak numbers.
S5 has 354 HP at 7000 RPM and 325 lb-ft of torque at 3500 RPM
S4 has 333 HP at 5500-7000 and 324 lb-ft at 2900-5300
The S4's supercharged engine hits its torque peak sooner and hold it longer. Which is similar to the S6's 4.0T vs the 5.2 V10.

S5 vs S4, its apples and oranges. Coupes can be inconvenient if you always have someone in the back. Sedans are more passenger oriented and even have the benfit of throwing groceries in the back because you dont have to fight with the front seat.

I generally would only get a coupe if its a sports car, like an R8Corvette, and 911 Turbo (although the 911 does have a back seat.) The S5 does have a nice wide stance to it though. If I did get an S5, it would have the Cab but its still apples and oranges

I find there to be a lot of discrepancy about the S4's HP Band on the 3.0T from Audi's website compared to actual and APR's dyno.

On the track I find the car has most power between 4000-6000 rpm and it drops after 6000. APR's dyno graph is consistent with my findings and experience on the track.

They have the same peak torque... I won't be surprised if the old V8 in S5 produces less horsepower and much less torque at lower RPM.

Anyway it's all moo point , since 2013 S5 has exactly the same powertrain as S4.

All of this will soon be meaningless when the 2013 S4 COUPE finally gets the same engine that the S4 has had. I also understand the price of the S5 has dropped by a $2-3K making the difference between the cars basically a matter of choice between 2 or 4 doors. Its a win win situation

Did you move again up here, or have you left before we even got to do a meet up?

No, I'm still here ... out in Snoqualmie. I've just been preoccupied with other things and have been neglecting AW. :\

I still need to get around to getting some of those VAG-COM things taken care of (winking LEDs, etc.).

And, on an unrelated note, I saw a nice RS4 yesterday driving home. It was a dark gray color (meteor?) with tinted windows. I think there may have been some "racing" decal or something in the back window. Nice car.
