I used a very light polish made by Wolfgang designed specifically for chrome.

One container for this stuff will last a long long time...3-4 years because a little bit goes a long way.

Have a look at Optimum Metal Polish. It leaves quite a slick finish and you should have to re-apply every few weeks. Better than some other products I've tried. A small amount goes a long way.

Collinite 850 Metal Polish

Inexpensive, very easy to use, non-abbrasive, and acts as a wax, so once applied and the soot removed, it only takes a soft clean cloth for months to come in order to remove any buildup.

What's the best way to protect new exhaust? My AWE exhaust (polished stainless steel) should be arriving soon, and before the install I was thinking of applying Mothers FX synwax (Polymer car wax) on the pipes for protection. Is this okay or can it hurt anything?

I wouldn't bother treating the entire exhaust. The heat will burn off anything you put on it very quickly. It might make it look better for pics before you install it..but that's about it.
