I've read that original intent was for the B8 S4 to be turbocharged, but that space constraints led to the use of a supercharger in the current 3.0L V6 powerplant. I've also read that the next generation S4 will in fact be turbocharged. So maybe the V6T label is related to some kind of continuity...B5 S4, original intent for B8, future plans for B9. Audi gets grilled on this in every review...there has to be some kind of logic to it. They're German, after all ;-)

The honest answer is what I heard directly from my Audi clients when I worked for their advertising agency a couple years back.
The most logical solution was to use a 3.0S badge similar to the 2.0T badge on the A4. Another logical solution they considered was to put a V6S instead of the V6T. The "S" would stand for supercharged. But, in the end, they decided against the logical solutions for the most illogical reason. The only "S" Audi wanted to have on the S4 was in the S4 badge. I'm not kidding. So, that eventually led to the V6T badge which they felt was the most consistent with other badging (e.g., 2.0T) and also signified forced induction (albeit the wrong type of forced induction).
