I currently run Dunlops, after having previously run Michelin Pilot Alpins and Yokohama W-Drives. The Dunlops are easily the best overall of the 3, IMO.

They handle better than the Michelins in both dry and snow, and at the same time are quieter than the W-Drives, which I thought were pretty darn quiet for a snow tire when I had them.

My $0.02

I used Dunlop Winter Sport on my prior Evo for my trips to Mammoth Mountain. However, in SoCal it can easily be 90 degrees in January. Tires held up ok during the hot sticky weather and worked really well in the snow/ice.

They also work really well if you ever find yourself on a dry lakebed in the middle of no where for some odd reason:

Previously I had Q rated (the super sticky) snow tires and the car felt squirrely at high way speeds on dry roads. Hated them.

The speed rating is important on snows...
+2...most BMW owners that run Winters run the Winter Dunlop M3's. I bought a set for my upcoming 2012 S4.

I ran Pilot Alpins on my previous car but picked up a very slightly used set of Blizzak LM25's on ebay for the S4......and saved big $$$$.

Sottozero serie II on both my B6 S4 Avant and last winter on my B8. Great tire for the PNW.

I had a set of Dunlop M3s on my B5. Good tires. Went with Michelin PA3s for the B8. I like the Michelins better. Stickier, much better on the dry, still great in snow. Feels more like a UHPAS with super snow ability. I'd drive around with them all year if I wasn't worried about them wearing away when it got hot out.

I did a car control clinic and an autocross in January on the Michelins. Temperatures were in the 30s and they were fantastic.

Didn't do any straight line runs, but i do remember hitting the top of 3rd gear, yanked my steering wheel really hard and kept my foot flat on the accelerator. Forever long drift afterwards.....

So, i'd say these are good "winter tires' as well as "dry lakebed" tires :P
