On thursday an huge chunk of ice came flying off an 18 wheeler right onto my windshield. The result is a 2 foot crack down the passenger side. Fortunately it didn't hit the body as it would have made a massive dent.
My car used to be registered and insured in NY but about 6 months ago I changed the registration to PA, and you cannot get glass insurance in that state. So basically I'm going to have to pay out of pocket for a new windshield. Does anyone have ballpark idea on what the replacement price should be? Thanks

First call your insurance agent and make sure that is true. If he will cover it, give Safelite your insurance details.
When a giant truck mudflap smashed the windshield in my S60R Safelite van came to my workplace, the guy was very cordial and almost felt embarassed to ask for my car keys, needless to say when i came out the job was outstanding, with the rain-sensing wipers working OK. He did it on the spot in the parking lot. They had warned me to park the car in the most isolated spot, so that the Safelite van can park next to it.
Some will ocasionally complain about deformity in the glass, as instead of the Saint Gobain Sekurit Safelite use generics.
Instant quote on Safelite web site www.safelite.com

My wife has had two windshields replaced after flying rocks on the freeway, in the last couple of years. One time it was $300, the other time it was $500. There are mobile services that will come out and replace the windshield, while your car is parked at work.
Check out this link, gives instant local recomentations and price quote. It shows replacement for the 2010 S4 at less than $400.

If you have a $500 comprehensive deductible, you will probably have to pay it out of pocket. But if your deductible is $250, you probably will get some insurance coverage. BTW, don't insist on an Audi brand replacement. Others are as good if not better. But make sure the one you get has the black tinting surrounding the perimeter. And I believe it will also have to be compatible with the rain sensing wipers.

Be careful when going in to get your windshield replaced: Worry Over Windshields
Sure a few reputable news organizations fudge some situations (i.e. ABC News faking the Toyota accelerator test), but I still think the report on the windshield should be taken very seriously. There's some good information to be taken out of that video...

OE glass will be expensive. I suggest a local reputable dealer for replacement as your windshield is an integral structural member. I've had a crack in my GTI windshield for over three years. With a $500 deductible it can wait. This is my grocery getter, so no big deal. Let us know how you make out.

If you really HAVE to replace your windshield, don't skimp out and get OEM for perfect fitment and quality.
