Default Winter tire size?

The Audi tire for winter is 245/40, my dealer is recommending 225/45/18. I live in Boston and ski in Vermont most weekends. I'm thinking that my dealers recommendation is a better idea.

The more narrow tire will have better traction. How much better? Who knows. Both will work . 225s will probably be cheaper as well. But they will also change your spedometer reading if they are not the same diameter which is likely.

225's will make your car look dumb. Get the 245's in a winter performance or studless ice/snow, they'll work real well. The narrower tire supposedly works better but a man has to draw the line somewhere.

I'm into the second winter with 225/45/18's. It's the closest in diameter in 18" you can get to the stock 19's, plus they're a little narrower for better traction for those of us who live in snowy areas. I'm not sure what the other poster meant when he said they look "dumb" but that's definitely not the case.

I drove a with my summer tires at 265/35/19 in our recent "Seattle white out" with little problem.

When I tried to buy stock 255/35/19 all seasons for the next go around, they were a 3 month back order...

So I ended up with 245/40/19 Conti's... I think that's thin enough. (looks damn thin)

My car did pretty damn well with 265's... and btw, IMO try not to listen to dealerships. (a general statement)

I guess I'll date myself a bit. At the time I was a field engineer and part of a first on-site five man crew to cut a passable road for trucks with heavy equipment, from coast into a virgin forest on a 10-25 degree slope, 1.5 miles long by 20' wide. Due to 10-30 degree temps, 2'snow, sleet covered and frozen ground areas were very less than ideal if you can imagine.
We had 4 SUVs types, if you remember 1972 International Scouts, all V8 auto, 4X had taller than street tires, for clearance of snow and rocks. These tall winter tires did overcome just about any float in drivabilty or steering that you can throw at them and I will never forget how well they performed.
When I need snow tires, I will be putting the taller winter tires on my Avant . As far as looks, nobody will notice if they are to skinny as you drive by them in deep snow. They will be to busy scratching their head on how you passed them in the white out.. cheers
