I've downshifted to 1st at 15-18mph at an autocross...took about 1/3 of a second. Rev match & GO!

Default Do you park on a hill?

Your tranny sounds exactly like mine, but I've found that if I park on level ground that the 1-2 and 2-1 shifts are MUCH smoother. Like it's a totally different car. Dealership says the car drives fine and everything is as it should be.

Default Maybe you just can't drive.

You can get it in there via double clutching, but HOW OFTEN do you really need to do this? Okay I see your example about going onto a hill -- fine. But when are you really turning onto a hill at 7 mph where you'd bog? I'm either going 15-20 through the turn where 2nd gear is fine, or else I'm going 2 mph which would likely be turning onto a hill from a stop in first gear.

Look, first gear is really a "get the car rolling" gear -- it's not intended to be downshifted to as frequently as the other gears (2, 3, 4) are.

ALL cars are somewhat difficult to downshift to first if you're going more than 5 mph. At least, all manual transmission cars I've ever driven are. This includes a Volvo, Honda, and Subaru in addition to the Audi.

Default You cannot downshift to 1st easilly coz there is no syncro on 1st

Almost every manual transmission car is designed that way to prevent accidental shifting to first. The S4 is no different.

Double clutch and rev match is the best way to do this. Don't force. Also, over time, as more miles build up, the action would be smoother.

Cheers.

"No synchro on 1st": Probably the #1 falsely held belief about the S4!

Default I used to live on Dexter.

I had a sweet 180 view of Lake Union. It was an apartment, though, and the interest rates in '99 were so low I bought a house in the Greenlake area. Maybe I'll see you around. I have 12 1/4 days until I get my Avant.
