It's probably the thermostat or water pump. But you need to be more clear about what conditions cause it to overheat. Highway speeds, around town, stuck in traffic. Are there any conditions under which the coolant temp is fine (other than cold starts and initial warm up periods)?

the coolant temp rises very slowly when cold, but when the temp needle gets to the middle(where it should be) it heats up faster, going all the way to the H at times. It doesn't matter how I drive either.

Plan on doing a full timing belt job while you're in there. Flush out the radiator while it's out of the car, just to make sure there is no obstruction in the radiator. If you've heard any wierd noises, it's probably the waterpump.
Oh, and no more driving the car when the water temp gets past 1 o'clock...don't want to do any damage.
