Default 16502 - Engine Coolant Temp. Sensor (G62) going from Bad to Very Bad

Last night on my way home from work the CE light came on, the car did not feel any different. The problem:

Controller: 8D0 907 551 M
Component: 2.7l V6/5VT G 0002
Coding: 06711
Shop #: WSC 63351
1 Fault Found:
16502 - Engine Coolant Temp. Sensor (G62): Signal too High
P0118 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
Readiness: 0000 0000

I searched the forums and found out I needed to change the Temp Sensor. My car did have the "black" one. I bought a new sensor PN 059-919-501-A (aka the "green" one) and replaced the sensor.

Now when I start the car I have a very rough idle and the engine missfires from time to time. I checked again for Fault codes but apart from the missfires there aren't any. I cleared the missfires but now I have no fault codes and still have a rough idle. Oh and the power brakes are gone (the brake pedal is very hard, and doesn't move too much). The only indication that something is wrong is that the Readiness code is not 0000 0000, it is something like 0110 - XXXX (I didn't write it down .

I am clueless as to what is going on.

Oh the car is a 2001 S4 with about 74K miles. No mods.

Any help greately appreciated.

Default Sounds like you possibly (inadvertently) knocked a vacuum line off. ...

or something else got unplugged when you were changing it. Take a look for anything obvious in that area.

That is my best guess given the brake issue and rough idle.

Someone more knowledgeable than me will probably be able to tell you exactly what the issue is.

Default Also- the readiness is not set because you just cleared the codes- they car needs to be...

driven for a while for it to run through its diagnostics and set.

Default Re: Also- the readiness is not set because you just cleared the codes- they car needs to be...

After I changed the sensor I did let it idele about 15 minutes and the rought idle did not change (or the readiness code).

I'll try driving it tonight around the block and see if that changes things (I'm at work now).

Why would the breaks be affected by a vacum line?

I do a check anyway and see if there are any unplugged hoses.

Another thing I was going to try was to remove the connector from the temp sensor and start the car.

Thanks for the help

Default Readiness may take a few days of driving- a trip around the block will not do it. Not really...

a big deal unless you need to get smogged/DEQ'd any time soon.

Default the brakes are vacuum assisted. I am not an expert but that was just my first thought....

someone more knowledgeable will surely pipe up with an answer.

Default I'm not an expert either but you are right, brakes are assitied by the vacuum lines. Check the

connections on the back of the block, like the brake booster hose and other vaccum lines. You probably pulled a hose.

Default Fixed!! well at least I know what went wrong

<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/153867/dsc_0015.jpg"></center><p>Yes I did knock off a hose when I changed the temp sensor. Not only did I manage to knock it off I also broke the little plastic clip that holds it in place. I should have noticed it this morning but I was looking in the wrong place.

I have to figure out what this thing is called so I can buy another plastic clip (see picture).

Thanks for the great advice
