I narrowed by choice down to the 330xi and S4 as well. I'll give you one guess what I ended up with.
In the end I went with the sportier and more powerful S4 that just happened to be the better deal.
Based on power transfer...
If you're considering getting an auto in either you should probably get the xi. If you're going stick then get the S4. Of course power is not everything.
What are you after with the car you buy? Do you want something sporty? do you just want AWD? Do you want better resale value as you're going to turn over the car quickly?
I think you get more for you money with the S4. I felt like BMW was nickle and diming me to get standard features in the Audi.
BMWs generally have better resale value if you're going to turn the car over quickly.
Once you drive the S4 there is no doubt which to get.

The S4 interior is of nicer quality IMO. If your into the contoured dash feel then I can see why you like BMW better. Take a look at the plastic and leather CLOSELY on both cars then report back.
Tranny on the BMW is nicer, the 3 series body style is very nice, but they are a dime a dozen where I live. Not at all unique. This may not be important to you.
The S4 engine is much interesting than the 330xi, once you get a taste of the S4 torque, it's hard to go back. Way more potential with the S4 for just a few $. The 330xi does have a nice engine and is going to be more reliable for the most part. If you understand the S4 weekpoints (TBB, BPV's, and FHose) and check them every once in awhile you will be fine. There are aftermarket parts that will improve reliability here as well as piece of mind.
Not sure I have much to say on the brakes, they are both marginal and effective in stopping the car on the street.
Good luck ..

answers are that you're gonna get.
Anyway, I met a guy once who wanted an S4 and got the 330i instead (not xi). I could tell he wished he went through with the S. It's a nice car, the BMW, but come on. Twin turbos? Real AWD? Easy tuning? You know the answer...
