I had the exact same question...
I drove the 330, it was nice. I drove the S4 and I was sold though. It was so superior, I don't even think about BMWs. The sad thing is that BMWs are overpriced compared to Audi. The S4 is priced around the 3 series, which it beats. The RS4 is priced around the M3, which it beats. The RS6 is priced around the M5, which it beats. BMWs are nice cars, but you're paying a real markup for the name itself. If it means that much to you, go for it...if you want more car for the money, the S4 is tops.

Haven driven both, the E46 M3's interior is not on par with the S4's, let alone the 330xi's, IMHO. Regarding the engine, I think nearly everyone would choose the S4.
